Altering Sharpening Effects
AlteringSharpeningEffects.png

A common question is asked: "How do I adjust the sharpening effect with the TLR sharpening tools." I posted an illustrated tip, Adjusting TLR Sharpening Effects. This video walks you through the same steps.

  • Adjust layer opacity
  • Adjust layer blend
  • Adjust filter settings via Smart Filters feature
  • Use a layer mask
  • Use Blend If settings for midtone roll-off

Good informative Video

Good informative Video Mitch, cleared up a few thing for me and I am finding the new actions easy to use. Though to be honest I still find the script for the blur easier than the action as it lets me adjust the amount of blur and I cannot seem to find that on the action, perhaps I am just missing something....  Still trying them out but I do find the Landscape sharpener very useful.. Thanks for all your hard work, very much appreciated. Smile

Adjusting Blur with TLR Creative Blur Action

Hi, Jess. Thanks for the feedback. You can adjust the Gaussian Blur setting from the Smart Filter layer. I've added a screenshot below that shows you where to double-click.

If you double-click there, it will open the Gaussian Blur dialog and you can change the settings.

You can also change the blend mode for the Smart Filter layer. I discussed this in the recent Tip page and video on adjusting sharpening effects. For the Smart Filter settings, you make the change on the layer, not up at the top of the layer palette. The screenshot below shows you where to double-click.

You can try these blend modes:

  • Lighten or Screen for a high key effect;
  • Darken or Multiply for for expressive shadows
  • Overlay, Soft Light, or Hard Light to add contrast and saturation. My personal favorite! Great for landscapes and still lifes.

You can adjust the Blend Ifs to restrict the effects further. For example you can use Lighten/Screen blend and Blend If settings that only allow the highlights nd quarter tones to be affected for a more controlled high key effect.

Cheers!

Mitch

Thanks Mitch just tried it

Thanks Mitch just tried it and works fine, I knew i was just missing some small point. Lots of flexibility with these actions and as I said your video really cleared up a lot of my questions.
Thanks again
Cheers Jess...

Re. Thanks Mitch just tried it

Enjoy! Experiment with the layer blends. I think you'll like the effect.

I'll probably add a few presets for high key, shadow emphasis, etc. in a version 1.0c release in a few days.

Answering your question also helped me find a bug. Thanks!

Mitch
