Color: It's All Relative, Part 2: What Is Color?
Submitted by mitch on Wed, 02/03/2010 - 18:46.

This is the second episode in a new TLR video series on understanding color from the perspective of a digital photographer. In this episode, Mitch explains how color is relative to the light source, the subject, the observer, and even to nearby colors.

Interesting, Mitch
I never stopped and thought about the application of the "milking stool" concept to color. And believe it or not, the leg of the stool I never considered was individual perception. Thanks for pointing out the obvious!

Slow and Easy
I'm going to take it slow and easy in this video series. Maybe I'm alone, but I have found that much of the discussion about color is abstract and hard to understand at first. I've read alot about basic color theory, and I found that, like sharpening photographs, I've had to read and think alot, in order to understand it better myself and to try to explain it in a way that's hopefully accessible.
You can probably see that I'm building up to more than basic color theory. This discussion begins the foundation for color management and color adjustments, too.
RE: Slow and Easy
What you are doing, is you are forcing me to chew slowly and savor every bite. I have mulled over the concept of individual color perception and I buy it big time! My Type A side says, "Enough of the tease, already!" But my other side says, "Yeah! I get it!"
As some of my students like to say, "You da bomb!"

Talk about "taking it slow"!
Kind of dropped this one....huh? :-)
Re. Talk about "taking it slow"!
I haven't dropped it. I hope to get more up this weekend.

Coming Attraction
I finished the Powerpoint for segment 3 on Luminosity. It's 54 slides. Some are even animated. The topic will be Lightness and why it's the most important color value. It'll be up soon!

I can't wait, Mitch!!
