Where Does the Money Go?

I run into irrational fools on the Web occasionally. Here's a recent one:

http://www.flickr.com/groups/pse/discuss/72157622570480909/

Ric Grupe, a valued member of this community tried to talk reason to a nut. This guy is using multiple names: AdobeHelper, GrfxDziner, Gwennie2006, etc. He's a dishonest shill who slanders me on his own forum and here.

Ric is right.  Anyone can have 99% of the content for free from this site without a donation. The only exception is the eBook/Video, and when people tell me they are students, pensioners, etc. and cannot afford it, I'll let them download it for free as well. ;)

Ric's and all other donations are appreciated. It costs close to $200 a month for this site just for the Internet access and GotToMeeting for things like Brown Bags. Why anyone should expect me to shoulder all that, I do not understand.

Anyone who thinks I'm in this to make a buck, does not understand me at all. I'm well aware that I can make more money from this site. I have had offers to co-market tools, etc. I reject them.

I see others selling actions and scripts. I see people bundling up videos and selling them. Etc.

I try to keep my politics off this site, but the context might help people better understand my business model. I am a good, old fashioned, European-type, democratic socialist. Making a buck is not part of my DNA. I'm grateful if the site breaks even.

I plow every dollar back into this site, in order to better serve the digital photography community. Here's where it's gone in the last year:

  • Dedicated server
  • ISP
  • Microsoft Server 2008 license
  • Purchase copies of Photoshop Elements 7 and Photoshop Elements 8 to make actions for them. I use neither for my own editing.
  • Purchase tools to review
  • GoToMeeting for Brown Bag sessions (something other sites charge $10 or more per attendee and I allow anyone to attend)

I just pulled my Schedule C for 2008. Gross income from donations and eBook/video sales was $3,972. Because I purchased a computer and expensed it rather than depreciate it, total expenses were $4,989.

In other words, I was out-of-pocket nearly $100 per month ($1,017 per month) during 2008. During 2007, I was out-of-pocket $1,527.

So, people will have to excuse the hell out of me when they shoot their mouths off in forums and claim I promote my site in order to make money. They have no idea what they're talking about. My accountant is glad to have this site break even. I do this as a service to the digital photography community, not as a commercial profit center.

IOW, I pay to share all the reviews, tools, tutorials, and videos on his site. Think of it last year as a $1,017 donation.

I was surprised that I was so quickly attacked in a Photoshop Elements forum for giving away actions. The only reason I bought PSE8 was to make as many TLR Photoshop actions accessible to PSE users. As they say, "No good deed goes unpunished."

I have just finished two more action sets for PSE8. I'm reluctant to post them on the Flickr! Photoshop Elements 8 site for fear that the same ignorant nut is there with multiple names to pretend his forum is active.

Thanks for trying to help, Ric.

to set the recors straight....

While Ric Grupe is still a valued member, he did just join this morning. So, he hasn't been valued by the community yet, as he hasn't added any input, other than a reference to your site. Hopefully Ric will spend some time browsing through our topics and pool. We look forward to his contributions.

As in any forum, his value will gain with the quality of his input. good evening

Re. to set the recors straight....

Ric Grupe is a valued member of THIS community. Has been, and for far longer than a day.

Ric did more than post a link.

You pretended to be a couple of people for a faux conversation and locked the thread because you're too cowardly to have a discussion about your role as a forum moderator.

You appear to be incapable of setting any record straight. You, sir, are a liar and a fraud. Take your adolescent behavior to your own forum.

True, Ric did do more. He

True, Ric did do more. He probably helped in getting you banned from flickr by putting the link to your site. Read my last comment here Mitch.

Re. True, Ric did do more. He

The only person who knew that my account was inactivated was you! So, now we all know the culprit and just how low you'll go. You have to censor everyone who disagrees with you, get them banned, etc. Stop spamming this site. Your links here have nothing to do with this blog entry. I pity you, that you hve to make such a public show. I posted a link to free actions for Photoshop Elements and you blew a gasket. I posted a review of your Flickr! group and you have now spent 24 hours being malicious. Notice how I am not invading your forum and stirring up trouble. What's the point in trying to reason with you, you're obviously nuts.

You Don't understand...

I helped you....all you had to do was remove the links. flickr bans people for that. I told you that you had a problem with your post, and you didn't fix it. They ban groups too. That is why I do not allow commercial links in my groups, plain and simple. Your PSE actions are not that different than the hundreds of thousands of free ones already available. Get your facts straight Mitch.

Re. You Don't understand...

No, Flikr bans people after a pathetic little spammer who is obviously obsessed (how many posts here since yesterday, perseverating on your strange ideations?) with malicious mischief.

Let's be clear on the time frame. No one knew my account was closed, not even me, until you announced it here.

You had already demonstrated on two threads yesterday that you stop any discussion that is remotely critical of your role as a forum host.

You use multiple aliases, holdig pretend dialogues among those aliases, since no one else will ratify your strange ideations. IOW, you are a liar and a fraud.

Don't pretend you had nothing to do with this. You had the only motivation.

Flickr, like Yahoo, does no investigation. They find it easier to delete an account and let people create another. They don't have the staff for all the petty fools like you wanting to ban people for spite, etc.

Have you noticed that no one -- here or on Flickr! -- except for your own aliases -- has even remotely defended your conduct.

All that happened was a nut got mad at me and has been acting like a petulant child for two days now.

My many posts on Flickr! have helped thousands of people, as verified by the logs for this site. You denied other digital photographer's information just to be a vindictive nut.

That's all that happened.

Seek medical care.

Thanks

I for one greatly appreciate the actions and panels that Mitch has provided for PS users. And when I ordered a copy of his e-book (but not the DVED) on sharpening, he also sent me the DVD at no additional charge. So, again, thanks Mitch.

Best,

David

Transparency & Donations

Here is another interesting link:

The politics of digital photography sites amazes me. I don't know how I can be more transparent. Post my Schedule C's?

It's just plain old jealousy

Ah Mitch, you are the victim of the green eyed monster.

In this case sad little people who have sites/blogs on a particular subject/genre getting all huffy when someone they see as a 'competitor' to their own golden 'words of wisdom' has the audacity to post on their site/blog.

So they puff themselves up with indignation, sanctimony and self righteousness, based around a very, very, very flimsy 'apple pie and motherhood, the internet shall be free' mantra.

Eventually expelling lots of hot air and deceiving no-one of the real motives behind their vitriol.

Do they not realise that everyone can see through their tissue paper thin camouflage and recognise their own seething need to only have people visit their site/blog that will perceive them as Gods :)

Do they not realise that they have in fact directed their audience (worshippers) to your exalted alter. :D

I must stop now, I can't stop laughing. "Oh the humanity"

PS Mithc you really should be sending a donation to these giants of intellect.

People are Strange

To quote Jim Morrison:

♪♫♪♫
When you're strange
Faces come out of the rain
When you're strange
No one remembers your name
When you're strange

It always cracks me up when someone makes a rediculous remark...knows damn well they are wrong...and then defend their position anyway.

Be sure that you are appreciated, Mitch.

BTW: I attended a Door's concert at the Cow Palace when I was a young sailor in San Francisco. They are still in my head....strange! :-)
