Go West!? Go East!? Or, Maybe South!?

Ok, up front, this is a bit narcissistic. Not entirely, though, since you're almost certain to see the results in future tutorials and videos.

My wife and I are flying to Las Vegas for a week next month. She has a veterinary conference. I will get out and do some photography for a few days.

So, the question is:

  • Go West and visit Death Valley?
  • Go East and visit Bryce, where I slipped on a trail and fracture my back a few years ago?
  • Go South (sort of) and visit the slot canyons near Page and up to Rainbow Bridge on the Colorado River?

Help me choose. Maybe point me to some of your photographs or some photography you really admire. Ever made one of these trips? Tell me about it. Thanks.

I imagine the climate of these 3 places varies vastly. I'd pick between the 3 not based on others' photos. Assuming this is nit your last trip to this region I'd pick between them based on the climate. Bryce is rather high elevation and could be cold and slippery. I could be wrong - you should research further or others can pipe in. My gut reaction is to go to Death Valley. What if, in the future, you are only back in the region during the summer months? Is Death Valley the place to be in July? Assuming you will be back to see these places again then I'd make this choice based on which is the place to be in February. That said maybe Bryce will have a slight dusting of snow which could make for unique photos- different from the typical summer shots. Good luck in your decision - either way you won't be disappointed.

Re. I imagine the climate of

Bryce is definitely cold, snowy, and slippery. Snow on the hoodoos is nice! :) However, that is precisely where I slipped on snow over ice on a trail and fractured a couple of vertebrae.

Zion is nice. Snow there, too.

I was leaning towards Bryce, but Death Valley has its attractions. You are correct, you can only do Death Valley safely during winter or late fall / early spring. Mid-Feb. is too early for many wild flowers, even in Death Valley, I believe. But there are the alkali pools, the salt flats, the mountains, etc. I'm sure my wife would be more comfortable with me over towards Death Valley than potentially slipping on a Bryce Canyon trail again.

Thans for the input.
