Forthcoming Video Tutorials

Chat with me about this, if you would. I have a couple of new video tutorials planned for this coming week or two.

Giving Photographs An Aged Appearance

You can age a photo quickly by converting to B&W, applying a sepia tone, and adding some noise. The problem: the effect is not all that realistic. I'll show viewers how to create a faux aged effect with the following steps:

  • Convert to B&W
  • Apply sepia effect
  • Apply film grain to an Overlay layer and apply Gaussian Blur for more realistic film grain effect
  • Discard detail in the extreme highlights and shadows
  • Fade the image with Levels Output sliders
  • Apply a gradient for a gradual fade or radial fade from a light source
  • Add yellow-brown tint to highlight fade
  • Add a bit of handwriting for old-fashioned appearance.
  • Fade handwriting
  • Use Clouds filter to add random damage marks

Dragan Effect

Add a grungy, dramatic effect to portraits.

Dragan Effect

3

Hi Mitch,

would love to learn more about the Dragan effect. I do like this pictures and their processing, and I also tried some presets for LightZone (one of the other image tweaking softwares that I use), but nothing actually came close to the original look. So, this would be a fantastic one to learn more about and try with some of the portraits that I had done. If you need a "guineapig" to try some thing or even process an image to post as an example, let me know.

Best regards, Thorsten
