The Photographer's Eye by Michael Freeman is simply among the very best books on composition. Scratch that. It's my opinion, The Photographer's Eye is the very best book on composition.
This book had the same effect on me as John Shaw's books on nature and macro photography. I sat down with the book and wanted to absorb every word. The photographs are excellent examples that illustrate the points well. The technical prose is well-written.
This is not another Photoshop or Lightroom recipe book. The focus is squarely on important photographic principles: composition, contrast, balance, etc. This is a book about careful thought behind the viewfinder. For the digital darkroom workflow -- stuff like giving a photograph a digital Velvia look for more "pop" -- you'll need to choose another book.
I mentioned before that Michael Freeman was one of my favorite photographer-writers. This book is why.
