Unless you're a complete novice, you've no doubt adjusted the contrast and levels for a photograph. Matt Campbell has written a tutorial for PSDTUTS+ that demonstrates a way of safely using Auto Levels, a better way to adjust the contrast, and how it can all be built into an action that can be turned into a droplet for drag and drop batch processing.
