Digital Photography Reviews from The Light's Right

Visual Poetry: Unmet Expectations

VisualPoetry.png

The title Visual Poetry grabbed my attention. The subtite, A Creative Guide for Making Engaging Digital Photographs was promising. Chris Orwig is one of my favorite Photoshop video instructors on Lynda.com. This was an obvious choice for me.

Unfortunately, the book did not deliver on that promise. It's didn't really even come close.

It comes in standalone and Photoshop plug-in versions, and it's compatible with Photoshop, Photoshop Elements, and other photo editors that support Photoshop plug-in filters. The standalone version can be used as an external editor with Adobe Lightroom.

Adobe Photoshop CS4 for Photographers: The Ultimate Workshop

ScheweEvening.png

If the content in this book is the ultimate in topics for a workshop for digital photographers, it makes me glad I've never spent several hundred dollars for a workshop with the likes of Jeff Schewe or Martin Evening.

I strongly recommend Martin Evening's book on Photoshop CS4 for professional digital photographers. It's an excellent book. Well written, if a bit stodgy. Comprehensive. Much of the content of this new book with Jeff Schewe is available in Martin Evening's "Adobe Photoshop CS4 for Photographers" and with more detail.

Photoshop CS4: Essential Skills

PhotoshopCS4EssentialSkills.jpg

Photoshop CS: Essential Skills by Mark Galer and Philip Andrews is an updated version of one of my favorite books oh Photoshop editing skills.

The technical prose is excellent. So are the sample photos and the DVD instruction. This book offers lots of practical, photographer-to-photographer advice.

Amazon Kindle 2

Amazon has released Kindle 2, and you might wonder why I would write a brief review of it for a digital photography site.

Believe it or not, there are already more than four dozen popular books on Photoshop available in Kindle versions. For example, some of Scott Kelby's books are ready for download.

I was an early adopter of the Pocket PC, largely for the ability to download and read eBooks with Microsoft Reader. The Kindle experience is completely different from any eBook reader I've ever used.

Mastering Landscape Photography

MasteringLandscapePhotography.jpg

Alain Briot has written some very interesting essays for Michael Reichmann's site: The Luminous Landscape. Mastering Landscape Photography: The Luminous Landscape Essays is more inspirational than technical.

There are thirteen essays in this book that discuss how to visualize, craft, present, and market prints from fine-art landscape photographs. It also contains a collection of Alain Briot's stunning landscape work.

The Photographer's Eye

ThePhotographersEye.jpg

The Photographer's Eye by Michael Freeman is simply among the very best books on composition. Scratch that. It's my opinion, The Photographer's Eye is the very best book on composition.

This book had the same effect on me as John Shaw's books on nature and macro photography. I sat down with the book and wanted to absorb every word. The photographs are excellent examples that illustrate the points well. The technical prose is well-written.
